KKE Architects Designs Atlanta Symphony Orchestras New Venue

KKE Architects Designs Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's New Venue

KKE Architects has designed the highly anticipated new venue for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO), helping to expand the Symphony's reach into the northern suburbs and provide a home for up to 35 national concerts annually as well as 15-25 arts-related, family, and free events in Fulton County, in the northern suburbs of Atlanta.

Earlier this year the ASO awarded naming rights to Verizon Wireless, a 12,000-seat, 46-acre site at Encore Park.

Ground was broken in June and the venue is scheduled to open in May of 2008.

Minneapolis based KKE Architects created seating for 7,000 people under a translucent fabric, fan-shaped roof suspended over a steel-framed structural system made up of large box truss girders and columns set 60-feet above the seating area.

Within the covered area are 4,750 fixed, stadium style seats and 46 box suites plus 2,068 removable seats.

An additional 5,000 patrons can be seated outside on a lawn area surrounded by two plazas featuring decorative facades and six entry gates.

Each plaza has a large food preparation building and seven food and beverage kiosks.

Sasaki Associates, landscape architects and master planners, Boston, Mass., collaborated on the design of the 46-acre wooded site.

"There's something very elegant and classical about enjoying a concert in the park," said Bill Bethmann, senior associate, KKE Architects.

Risk Taking and Bold Vision Are Key to Climate Action

Risk Taking and Bold Vision Are Key to Climate Action

CABE has set out its stall on sustainable design, with a new briefing paper, Sustainable design, climate change and the built environment.

It has identified a raft of measures needed to in order to meet the carbon reduction targets (80% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 according to the Stern Review).

These measures include: much stronger leadership from the public sector, which procures over £150 billion of buildings, goods and services each year; recognition of the central role of urban design and urban management in climate change strategies; and a far greater scale and sufficiency of action for building and refurbishment programmes.

It has also identified some of the changes needed within industry and the private sector.

CABE believes, for instance, that all UK-based multi- national construction groups should undertake an ecological and carbon footprint of their operations and publish the results.

CABE design reviews 400 significant schemes a year, yet it has only seen five housing schemes and masterplans which show any real ambition for sustainability.

They are One Gallions in Newham, East London; Middlehaven in Middlesbrough; New Islington in East Manchester; Waterlooville, Hampshire, and Southall Gasworks in Ealing, West London.

Undoubtedly there are others out there, which haven't been seen at CABE's design review, but such a paucity a full five years on from eco village BedZED's opening in south London i

Autodesk Showcases Sustainable Design Technology at 2007 Greenbuild Conference and Expo

Autodesk today announced that it will be a Silver sponsor of the 2007 Greenbuild Conference Expo, Nov. 7-9 at McCormick Place in Chicago, and will host three events for media, customers and attendees.

The Autodesk booth in the expo hall will also be constructed using sustainable materials including chairs made from 98% post recycled airplane aluminum and rubber flooring made from 76% post recycled tires.

This will be Autodesk's third consecutive year as a sponsor and exhibitor at the Greenbuild Expo and the company invites interested media to attend the Autodesk events at this year's show.

At Greenbuild Expo 2006 in Denver, Autodesk announced that it had entered into a strategic relationship with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to expand the use of technology to increase mainstream adoption of sustainable design and green building.

The first result of this relationship is the new Autodesk Sustainable Design Curriculum, developed in consult with the USGBC's Formal Education Committee.

The first version of this curriculum will be unveiled at the USGBC Formal Education Committee's Educator Summit on Nov. 6 which will bring together representatives from Autodesk, members of the USGBC's Formal Education Committee, industry and academic leaders as well as students to discuss best practices to advance sustainable design education and the required skills and knowledge architecture and design students need to succeed in professional practice.

A-cero Wins the Nebula International Ideas Competition in Dubai

A-cero Wins the Nebula International Ideas Competition in Dubai

The spanish architecture studio A-CERO, headed by J. Torres and R. Llamazares, has won the restricted international competition of ideas for the design of a new exclusive residential zone in the Madinat Al Arab district, in Dubai's coast.

The new development, called Nebula, includes a hotel, luxury apartments, commercial spaces, offices, a marina and leisure zones, comprising 450.000 sq. meters of built surface, near the third (and the bigger) of the Palms, on this ever changing coastline.

The work will be undertaken in three fused locations corresponding to three plots situated in zone C for a low-rise 10-storey development, three apartment towers of 20-30 storeys and two 50-storey towers.

A-CERO's proposal tries to build a new space from the relation between the gulf sea and the desert behind, through a dynamic volume composition arising from the contact with the sea, and gently growing inland to configure a forceful suite of very tall buildings.

The design is inspired by the ephemeral architecture of the local nomadic culture and the works of artist David Nash, an inspirational figure for the studio's architecture.

The use of water, both as the main landscape element and as a natural climate conditioner, plays the most important part in the exterior design of this new project.
