Label HMKM Designs Hyundai Department Store in Korea

HMKM Designs Hyundai Department Store in Korea

HMKM is designing the new concept department store for the Hyundai Department Store Group in Seoul, South Korea.

Best known in the UK for its vehicles offering, the Hyundai Corporation is a huge business which also counts shipbuilding, retail and chemical production among its activities.

Christian Papa, director of HMKM, says, "As with Japan, South Korea has major conglomerations, involved in everything from heavy shipbuilding to making cars and building huge department stores.

There are ten- and 12-storey stores in every suburb.

The scale of retail is incredible."

AIA Announces the 2009 COTE Top Ten Green Projects

AIA Announces the 2009 COTE Top Ten Green Projects

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) have selected the top ten examples of sustainable architecture and green design solutions that protect and enhance the environment.

The projects will be honored at the AIA 2009 National Convention and Design Exposition in San Francisco.

The 2009 COTE Top Ten Green Projects program celebrates projects that are the result of a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems and technology.

They make a positive contribution to their communities, improve comfort for building occupants and reduce environmental impacts through strategies such as reuse of existing structures, connection to transit systems, low-impact and regenerative site development, energy and water conservation, use of sustainable or renewable construction materials, and design that improves indoor air quality.

Members of the jury include: Michelle Addington, Yale School of Architecture; Brandy Brooks, Assoc. AIA, Community Design Resource Center of Boston; William Leddy, FAIA, Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects; Nadav Malin, BuildingGreen LLC; Kim Shinn, LEED AP, LTLC Engineering for Architecture; and James Timberlake, FAIA, Kieran Timberlake Associates LLP.

"In architecture, performance and aesthetics are inextricably linked.

The COTE Top Ten is one of the very few awards that evaluates performance and design," said jury members.

"Other awards and organizations look strictly at performance without care for how a building looks."

The Art of Tile Designing with Time-Honored and New Tiles

The Art of Tile: Designing with Time-Honored and New Tiles

From subtly shimmering white subway-style walls to dramatic colorful mosaics, tile is one of the most seductive ways to enhance the beauty of a space.

Long prized for its durability, tile has become more of an object of aesthetic desire than ever before.

Your heart may be set upon using it, but with thousands of imaginative options available, you may not know where to begin.

Now, The Art of Tile beautifully illustrates what to use, how to use it, and where to use it.

First, design writer and tile enthusiast Jen Renzi walks you through the basics of using the medium: selecting the best materials for certain spaces; installation and maintenance considerations; and aesthetic aspects, such as using tile as an accent or pairing tiles with different patterns in the same area.

Along the way, you'll see dozens of installations to spark your imagination, including all of the latest advances and never-before-seen options, such as luxurious leather tile floors that coddle the feet, surprisingly realistic imitation-wood tiles made from porcelain, and an explosion of roses in a red-and-white dining room mosaic.

With inspiring photographs of tile installations from Montauk to Morocco, an extensive resource guide, and expert advice from architects, designers, homeowners, and tile manufacturers, The Art of Tile is as much a feast for the eyes as it is an indispensable and comprehensive resource.

Design Plans for British Museums New Development Revealed

Design Plans for British Museum's New Development Revealed

The British Museum has revealed the designs for its forthcoming development project in advance of a planning application to Camden Council in April 2009.

The £135 million development has been designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) and will be the largest development onsite since the Great Court opened in 2000.

Subject to planning permission, the new development will open in late 2012.

This project will ensure the Museum maintains its position as a leading institution for the study of human culture, in London, in Britain and the World through an upgrade of key facilities.

The development will address urgent needs in terms of the Museum's infrastructure and will provide a new exhibition space, state-of-the-art conservation and science laboratories and studios, world-class accommodation for the study collection, as well as facilities to support its extensive UK and international loan programme.

It will allow the Museum to enhance the exhibition experience, to lend more of the collection and most importantly will continue to preserve the collection for future generations.

The Museum has a rich architectural heritage, the site has developed and grown at each stage of its history.

This development will transform an under-utilised section of the site in the north west of the Museum, situated adjacent to the impressive King Edward VII Building which was completed in 1914.
