Label Verner Panton The Collected Works

Verner Panton: The Collected Works

As a child, Danish designer and architect Verner Panton had always dreamt of a large room full of colourful cushions.

His designs reveal that love for bold colours and his preference for spatial harmony and comfort.

Unlike his peers who followed the Scandinavian handcrafted tradition, Panton was eager to explore new possibilities and seek new ways of living.

As early as in the 1950s, he was experimenting with new materials and industrial production techniques to create playful and radical works such as coloured plastic and steel wire-framed furniture.

In his opinion, "colour is more important than form," and a good combination of colours could add depth and three-dimensionality to a space.

But he did not neglect the object's form either - the simple geometric shapes or organic forms in his works often challenged conventions and encouraged 'interaction' between the user and the object.

Over a career that spanned almost half a century, Panton emerged as one of the most colourful, imaginative, innovative and forward-looking designers of the 20th century.

This exhibition showcases more than 100 of his chairs, lamps, textiles and sculptures, seeking to capture the diversity of his works, which contributed significantly to the development of design in the latter half of the 20th century.

Portland Buildings Coming Up Green

Portland Buildings Coming Up Green

This week, the Portland City Council unanimously approved a green building resolution, requiring all municipally owned new construction and major renovations building projects to be built to LEED Silver standard with additional energy credits to meet the energy and carbon reduction goals of the Architecture 2030 Challenge.

"The climate is changing faster now than any time in the past 500,000 years.

The public wants change - is demanding change - and cities must take the lead to make it happen," stated Mayor Jill Duson.

"Since buildings are the single largest contributor to carbon emissions to the earth's atmosphere, it makes sense for us to reach our carbon reduction goals by targeting buildings." Portland was the first city to sign on to the Governor's Carbon Challenge during Duson's first term as Mayor.

The ordinance requires all municipally owned or occupied new construction and renovation projects over 5,000 square feet with a total construction cost of more than $250,000, and all new city-funded private construction and renovation projects over 10,000 square feet with a total construction cost of $250,000, be certified to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver Standard and achieve the minimum LEED Optimize Energy Performance points necessary to meet the targets of the Architecture 2030 Challenge.

RIBA Futures Fair 2009 Society and Stimulus

RIBA Futures Fair 2009: Society and Stimulus

This summer, the Royal Institute of British Architects' think-tank Building Futures will be launching the new look Futures Fair 2009.

Themed Society and Stimulus, the season runs from May - June 2009 and features four provocative breakfast seminars focusing on how factors such as terrorism, media, technology, sustainability and immigration could impact on the future look and feel of our towns, cities and regions.

The future of our towns and cities is shaped by a variety of socio-economic factors which, in 2009, has never felt more fragile.

The current economic crisis has laid bare unresolved tensions and the needs of our towns and cities.

Now is a great time to consider what lies ahead and rethink our strategic approach to the built environment.

Technological and environmental change will affect us all.

It is only through mapping new trends and behavioural norms that we can be responsive to future needs and requirements.

The Judging Panel consisted of a Head of College from the University of the Creative Arts, Elected and Executive Members of Maidstone Borough Council and Kent County Council, with Robert Sakula (Ash Sakula Architects) acting as the RIBA Adviser.

National Architecture Week Goes Virtual

National Architecture Week Goes Virtual

National Architecture Week, which this year falls on April 13-19, was created to encourage a public dialogue about architecture.

Such conversations are especially pressing as communities across America discuss how best to invest the funds of the Economic Recovery Act.

To accommodate this urgency, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) is using social media to open and foster greater participation by the public and AIA members to employ design thinking to transform today's challenges into tomorrow's opportunities.

The AIA Facebook group page will be used to provide a broad range of knowledge resources from the National component.

However, state and local components, individual members, and the public are likewise being encouraged to import material to the site.

This could include information about design awards, videos, or local advocacy and public outreach initiatives.

The goal is to enable, not control, conversations that will identify opportunities to apply the skills of the architecture profession to the particular needs of individual communities.
