Label Landscape Architecture Magazine Goes Digital

Landscape Architecture Magazine Goes Digital

Landscape Architecture, the magazine of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), introduced its digital format online today with the April issue.

Zinio, a global online publishing and distribution company, began offering the magazine on its site for annual subscription or single-copy purchase.

Digital issues of Landscape Architecture will be searchable, increasing the magazine's usefulness for research and archiving.

Interactive and multi-media capabilities will also be embedded in the digital issues, allowing readers to link directly to related online information.

"Landscape Architecture magazine was founded in 1910, and as we near the 100th anniversary, its online presence brings it fully into the 21st century," said J. William "Bill" Thompson, FASLA, editor of the magazine.

"I know this will make the important information in its pages available in a more interactive way."

In celebration of National Landscape Architecture Month, the April Issue is available free.

Public Receptors a Textile Installation by New York Prize Fellow Gabi Schillig

Public Receptors: a Textile Installation by New York Prize Fellow Gabi Schillig

Van Alen Institute announced Public Receptors: Beneath the Skin, a textile installation by New York Prize Fellow Gabi Schillig, a conceptual artist and architect based in Berlin.

Schillig's wearable spatial structures mediate between private users and public spaces, provoking new relationships between bodies, clothing, and the built environment.

Redefining the garment as tactile architecture, Schillig explores the potential for soft geometries and surfaces of textiles, conventionally associated with individual bodies and human scale, to generate alternative arrangements of social space and modes of interaction in the urban fabric.

For Schillig, multiple users, desires, and urban contexts are necessary to materialize her work.

Designed to be interconnected and shared, her second skins evolve an architecture built upon the creativity of its participants.

Over the course of her fellowship residency, Schillig has developed a new set of textile structures she calls public receptors, and she has conducted a series of site-specific experiments for their implementation in New York City.

Made from felt, latex, and a variety of fastening devices, the structures are designed for attachment to specific building surfaces and street conditions, to be improvised and appropriated for clothing, furniture, habitat, or other uses.

Perkins Eastman Unveils Design for Accident and Emergency Care Hospital in the UAE

Perkins Eastman Unveils Design for Accident and Emergency Care Hospital in the UAE

International architecture and design firm Perkins Eastman recently unveiled the design of Al Maktoum Accident and Emergency (A&E) Hospital - the newest and most sophisticated Accident and Emergency Hospital of its kind in the UAE.

"Based on our experience with large-scale complex care facilities, we believe that the Al Maktoum A&E Hospital will create a new standard for innovative, patient-centered care, in the UAE," says Jonathan N. Stark, AIA, Principal and Managing Director of Perkins Eastman International.

Chosen by the Dubai Health Authority and the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS) to create an advanced A/E hospital, Perkins Eastman designed a facility capable of providing immediate care for minor- to high-level trauma.

An ambulance receiving area is directly linked to a surgical trauma operating suite and a diagnostic imaging unit with MRI, CT, and X-ray capabilities.

The highly integrated design provides significant flexibility and a focus on patient care and family needs.

The 300-bed facility includes a large, five-floor nursing unit providing specialized treatment and care for patients recovering from surgery.

Chiming with the Scottish government's designation of 2009 as "Year of Homecoming", this year's Convention will have a strong international theme.

The main plenary session "Making it Abroad" will feature a stimulating range of high profile Scottish architects and artists working successfully abroad.

A range of exciting events are planned for the three days of the Convention, including an architectural exhibition and symposium in DCA and an evening reception with live jazz from The Ritz Trio (fronted by the celerbated guitarist Marcus Ford) in the stunning setting of Hospitalfield in Arbroath on Thursday 14th May.

The main Convention on Friday 15th May at Caird Hall, conveniently located in the heart of the city centre, will be followed by an informal party at a memorable venue - the award-wining Discovery Point on the waterfront which showcases Captain Scott's famous polar exploration ship RRS Discovery.

Guests will enjoy a drinks reception, buffet, guided tours of RSS Discovery and live music from acclaimed indie band The Hazey Janes.
