Ben Bradshaw Attacks Prince Charles for Scuppering British Architecture

Prince Charles' ongoing battle against modernist architecture suffered another blow when the culture secretary, Ben Bradshaw, criticised him for continuing to oppose leading UK projects.

Bradshaw's comments in a press interview at the weekend, confirmed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, suggested he "would be worried" if architectural schemes were being shelved because of "any one individual".

The culture secretary had been asked about the prince's involvement in the Chelsea barracks scheme, which has sparked outrage among allies of the architect, Lord Rogers, and led to calls for the profession to boycott the prince's May speech to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

AIACC Recognizes Mark Cavagnero with the 2010 Distinguished Practice Award

AIACC Recognizes Mark Cavagnero with the 2010 Distinguished Practice Award

The American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), announced Mark Cavagnero, FAIA, as the 2010 recipient of the Distinguished Practice Award.

This award recognizes an individual architect's work, responses to the challenges of an individual building type, design excellence, innovations within the design and construction process, and a demonstrated collaborative spirit.

The award is given in recognition of a career that exemplifies dedication and commitment to the built environment.

Founded 21 years ago, Mark Cavagnero Associates has fulfilled its founding vision by serving the public through the design of timeless public spaces.

Working with principal Laura Blake, AIA, this vision continues to be cultivated today.

Public projects often involve an array of multiple parties, complex problems, limited budgets and years to complete.

Just one example of this is the development of a master plan to expand the Oakland Museum of California, a landmark designed by Kevin Roche.

The plan not only won the approval of the multiple stakeholders but Kevin's as well. Phase two of the plan was recently completed.

With the Charlie Sava Pool, (a public pool facility in San Francisco), the firm collaborated with consultants and builders to analyze and quantify various options.

Working with the City, the firm was able to demonstrate the value of a new, more durable concrete building that takes full advantage of the site.

Rafael Vinoly Architects 121st Police Precinct Station House Officially Breaks Ground

Rafael Vinoly Architects' 121st Police Precinct Station House Officially Breaks Ground

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg joined New York Police Department Commissioner Ray W. Kelly, Department of Design and Construction Commissioner David J. Burney FAIA along with Staten Island elected officials on Thursday to celebrate the groundbreaking of Rafael Vinoly Architects' 121st Police Precinct Station House.

This building will function as the headquarters of Staten Island's first new police precinct in decades.

Responding to the borough's rapidly growing population, the 121st Police Precinct will fill the need of an expanded law enforcement presence, cutting response times and relieving the workload of existing precincts.

The 121st Precinct Station House is a model for green design, as it seeks to achieve LEED Silver certification.

It will be the first police facility in the city so designated under Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC 2030 sustainable design initiative.

The 121st Police Precinct Station House's design responds to the challenges of an irregular site with two distinct building volumes: a two-story linear bar, gently arcing in plan and gradually increasing in height as it approaches the commercial district of Richmond Avenue, and a separate one-story volume where the site flares outward to the south.

The second floor cantilevers over toward Richmond Avenue symbolically reaching out to engage the community.

This cantilever defines the main entrance and creates a visual link between the main lobby and Richmond Avenue.

Mono A Unique Office Space Design

Mono: A Unique Office Space Design

Mono's Uptown location, known for funky shops, eateries and apartments, is the perfect setting for creative genius to sprout.

A bold blue door signals its entrance, in a historic building that had sat vacant for almost 20 years.

Previously it housed a print shop and car dealership.

Guests are greeted with modern, finished concrete floors that are still covered in flicks of color from the old print shop, and bright white walls, accented with the same blue that greets them from the street.

The blue is used for the conference room doors and old barn doors that slide open to reveal the space.

Work "pods" surround the heart of the office, instead of traditional cubicles.

Mono co-founder Chris Lange collaborated with architect Charlie Lazor, of Lazor Office and Flatpak House to overhaul this space and make it a place where creative ideas truly have a place to roam free.
