Since 2003 the number of cities with green building programs has risen from 22 to 92 for an increase of 418%.
In an effort to examine the eco-friendly initiatives of U.S. cities, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) commissioned a study of communities with populations of greater than 50,000 to spotlight the growth and effectiveness of green building policies.
The report, Local Leaders in Sustainability, analyzed 661 communities' best practices, strategies and trends, as well as provides recommendations for cities that are looking to implement green building programs.
"Sustainable design practices have the potential to transform the built environment from an energy intensive past towards a more energy efficient, green future," said Paul Mendelsohn, AIA vice president, Government and Community Relations.
"Technological advances now allow for the design of buildings that are efficient, modern, possess great aesthetics and are financially viable.
High premiums for green buildings are no longer the case as costs are coming more in line with traditional building practices."

For the new interiors concept for Knightsbridge bar and club Vendome, designers Blacksheep referenced the area's high-end fashion stores, creating a colourful, glamorous and high-end destination environment - and the perfect location for posing in a newly-purchased outfit!
Taking their inspiration in particular from monogrammed luggage and quirky and individual handbags, Blacksheep have designed a very individualistic space that is high on luxury detail, unusual colours and sumptuous fabrics and which communicates a precious and female-friendly aura.
Blacksheep also created the new identity for Vendome (together with Studio Output), as well as brand applications including menus and matches.
The previous occupant of the 1,900 sq ft space, a club called Bardo, had lost its lustre and was starting to look tired and lacking in buzz and atmosphere.
It also suffered from a number of design problems, including poor lighting, uncomfortable seating and furniture that was disproportionately large for the space.
The new branding and interiors project began with a space rationalisation plan, the key to which was the installation of both a brand new bar and a new DJ booth, allowing for fully flexible functioning for the space as a bar and also as a nightclub.
The area in front of the DJ booth can be cleared for dancing or can also be filled with freestanding furniture in quieter times.

For nearly a decade, scientists in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park were working in less than optimum conditions on the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI), a project that is documenting the 800-square-mile Park's estimated 100,000 species of living organisms.
Now these park scientists have moved their work to a new 15,000-square-foot, site-sensitive, sustainable building that will facilitate their research efforts.
Designed by the architecture firm Lord, Aeck & Sargent, the new Twin Creeks Science and Education Center will help scientists gain the knowledge that is essential for the effective protection and preservation of the Park's ecosystem.
Targeting LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the $4.4 million Twin Creeks facility, which will become the National Park Service's (NPS) first LEED building in the southeastern United States, responds to a variety of challenges and constraints placed on the architects.

Participants on this exciting course will explore the whole range of ways that design can contribute to a more sustainable society, which they can then apply to their particular field of interest or expertise.
They will study how nature's design process can influence human-made design, what constitutes form and function, how beauty relates to sustainable design and how co-design processes can lead to innovative solutions.
The final week will provide an introduction to cradle-to- cradle design, a methodology for intelligent product design which takes into account the entire life-cycle of the product.
The course is intended for everyone whose work or interests involves design including designers, artists, architects, planners, academics and teachers.
