100 Houses Taschens 25th Anniversary Special Edition

100 Houses: Taschen's 25th Anniversary Special Edition

The greatest challenge in designing homes is negotiating the delicate balance between aesthetics and the personal desires of the occupants.

While it's important for the structure to reflect the vision and style of the architect, the client must ultimately feel at home beneath the roof.

It is particularly interesting, therefore, to examine the homes that architects create for themselves.

If houses reflect their owners' personalities, then architects' own homes are like autobiographies.

Location, layout, style, lighting, artwork, furnishings-every detail adds color to the story.

Each of these 100 dwellings, presented A-Z by architect, speaks more about its designer than any other building possibly could.

The Story Behind the London Eye

The Story Behind the London Eye

Sweeping one of the world's most famous skylines at 135 metres in height, the London Eye is the largest observational wheel in the world, and provides a spectacular 30 minute "flight" over the capital.

But if it had not been for the vision, commitment and sheer persistence of David Marks and Julia Barfield, the husband and wife team of architects behind the project, the London Eye might never have been built.

Eye tells the various stories behind the conception, development, realisation and construction of the capital's newest landmark, including personal and political dramas, corporate conflicts, doubts, risks, obstacles and accidents.

Against the backdrop of New Labour's pre-millennium Britain, prominent public figures attacked and defended the project, there were unprecedented design and construction problems to overcome, and Marks and Barfield had to fight every inch of the way to maintain the integrity of their vision.

This seminal moment in British architecture is celebrated through the dazzling photography of Marcus Robinson, insightful writing by The Guardian journalist Steve Rose, with an introduction by Richard Rogers and the clean and modern design of Neville Brody's Research Studios.

75 Years of Architecture at MoMA

75 Years of Architecture at MoMA

MoMA's Department of Architecture, founded in 1932, was the world's first curatorial department of its kind.

This exhibition of drawings and models from the collection celebrates the department's seventy-fifth birthday and demonstrates the development of its collecting practice, with several recent acquisitions on view.

The installation examines themes in the history of modern architecture - including organicism and expressionism; urbanism; visionary architecture; and the art of drawing-that were overlooked in MoMA's inaugural architecture exhibition, Modern Architecture: An International Exhibition, which defined the International Style for several generations.

Casa Camper

Casa Camper

Reflecting the rural world's simplicity and authenticity, the Casa Camper transports the values, the hospitality, and down-to-earthiness of the Mediterranean countryside.

The hotel's philosophy is emphasized by an astonishing range of high-quality amenities in the hotel's 25 rooms and public spaces, varying from natural soaps, shampoos, and bottled water, to the daily fresh fruit and the on-the-house fresh snacks "ten ten pie", offered all day in the lobby lounge.

Located on el Raval, in Barcelona's city centre between Las Ramblas and the Museum of Contemporary Art, only a few steps from the famous La Boqueria market and the main city shopping areas, the Casa Camper is the ideal gateway to explore and indulge in this Spanish metropolis' vibrant atmosphere and exalted nightlife.

You can do this actively by using one of the hotel's bicycles, or, alternately, you can take a more leisurely approach by quietly reposing on the rooftop terrace, enjoying the spectacular view across the city.

The large ballroom housing up to 110 people and incorporating the latest technology, is at your service for meetings and events.
