National Portrait Gallery Showcases Young Peoples Ideas

National Portrait Gallery Showcases Young People's Ideas

Young people in London have been exploring their ideas about regeneration, homes, schools, streets and safety through a project run jointly by CABE and the National Portrait Gallery, London.

The My Space project has led to an exhibition, on at the gallery until 3 February 2008, that aims to show how creative involvement with the local built environment can tackle disadvantage and social exclusion.

The project began as a partnership between the gallery and CABE's education team, which identified three youth groups in the London boroughs of Camden, Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

Over the summer, these young people, aged 12 to 21, worked with professional architects, textile specialists, photographers, DJs and spray artists to create both site-specific work and individual artworks for displayed in the exhibition.

Nancy O'Brien, CABE's head of education, said: 'The My Space project highlights the importance of educating young people about the built environment and the role which they have to play in shaping the places around them.

Through creative learning, they have been able to consider the ways in which buildings and spaces affect their everyday lives.

The project is particularly significant for the young people whose local environment is changing.'

In Tower Hamlets, a group of students from the St Paul's Way Community School worked with spray artists to create large-scale portraits in their school grounds.

Theres a Beatles Revolution Under Way in Las Vegas

There's a Beatles Revolution Under Way in Las Vegas

There's a Beatles Revolution under way in Las Vegas, where The Mirage recently inaugurated a lounge created by a team of Montreal designers under the direction of Jean- François Bouchard, Cirque's Director of Creation.

It's a space bursting with innovations in multimedia graphics and technology.

To form his team, Jean-François Bouchard called on the architect Stéphanie Cardinal of Humà Design, Nol Van Genuchten for lighting, the Moment Factory for the design of the "animated walls," Vertigo's Bill Keays for the design of the interactive tables and DJ Alain Vinet for the music.

Together, they began to lay down the key concepts that would form the basis for the project.

Taking their cue from the 1960s, they decided to emphasize elements such as the transition from black and white to colour, supreme love, the psychedelic graphics and the return to handmade objects, among other things.

To get to the Revolution Lounge, you have to go through the Abbey Road Bar.

Open 24 hours a day, the bar is both a reference point and a gathering spot.

Between the two, giant letters three metres (10') high spell out "Revolution."

Patrons can even sit in the curve of some of the letters, four of which are inverted to spell "LOVE" backwards.

On the wall, the Moment Factory has revived graffiti from the actual Abbey Road.

SA Team Wins Pan African Parliament Design Contest

SA Team Wins Pan African Parliament Design Contest

A trio of South African architects have clinched a R3-million Africa-wide competition with their design for the new home of the Pan African Parliament in Midrand.

Earth Lab Architects - which comprises three Durban architects - drafted a design that symbolises the "coming age of the African continent", according to the award jury.

The competition was launched in April after the South African government offered to host the seat of the Pan African Parliament.

The parliament was formed three years ago to provide a common platform for Africans to take on challenges facing the continent.

The new parliamentary building will be located in Randjesfontein, Midrand - a neutral location that will not be overshadowed by South African institutions.

Fifty-five anonymous entries from throughout Africa were submitted and were eventually whittled down to the top five, which was announced in Cape Town last week.

Part of the brief to architects was that the building should have a distinct presence, be a landmark building "reflecting the aspirations of the African continent, and must be designed to enable future expansion and change" - requirements that the winning team of Rod Choromanski, Steven Reynolds and Suren Indhul fulfilled.

Clapham House Blacksheep Design Bachelor Pad with Emphasis on Hidden Storage

Clapham House: Blacksheep Design Bachelor Pad with Emphasis on Hidden Storage

Blacksheep were commissioned by a private bachelor client, who had just purchased a traditional, four-storey Victorian townhouse in Clapham, south London, to create a more contemporary interior for the home, with extensive AV facilities and newly-appointed rooms, including a cinema area, study/games room and enlarged master ensuite bedroom.

The brief for the project was to use bespoke joinery to create rooms with discreet or even completely hidden storage (with a complete ban on open shelving!), with hidden or integral AV and individual TV screens throughout the house, to be hidden where possible when not in use.

Doors were also to be re-hung to improve entry where needed.

Blacksheep also created bespoke furniture for the house where appropriate to meet the exact needs of the client.

On the lower ground level, the house is now comprised of a main kitchen area, new cinema room and dining room.

On the ground floor are the office area, formal living room and a games room.

The ensuite master bedroom (for which two existing bedrooms were knocked into one) is located on the first floor, along with a further guest room and bathroom, with two further double bedrooms, a single bedroom and a bathroom on the top floor.
