On 10 October Culture Minister Margaret Hodge announced the winner of this year's Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award.
Dalby Forest Visitor Centre in North Yorkshire, commissioned from White Design by the Forestry Commission, stood out from a strong shortlist of 18 projects.
It is everything that we should expect from a new public building: it adds to the enjoyment of the places and spaces around us; it inspires those using and visiting it; it brings new opportunities; and it also shows that innovative design can help build a sustainable future.
The judges of the award said: "The client had the vision to maximise sustainability in creating the building - and then to use it as an educational example for all visitors."
Opened in April, the centre is driving a regeneration project that will attract more visitors to Dalby Forest and the North York Moors National Park, leading to new business and employment opportunities.
Dalby Forest is one of the most visited outdoor attractions in Yorkshire - about 300,000 people a year - and the new centre has already made it even more popular.
The week after the centre's opening was the busiest in the forest's 85-year history.
The building has been designed to be as energy efficient, recyclable and sustainable as possible - so much so that it can completely dismantled and recycled at the end of its life.
The materials, machinery and labour used in construction were sourced locally.

The incredible, indispensable Taschen encyclopedia of architecture.
Unlike most architecture encyclopedias, which tend to concentrate more on buildings and floor plans than their designers, this tome puts the architects in the spotlight, profiling individuals so that readers can get a clear overview of their bodies of work.
Each architect's entry features a portrait, quote, and short biography as well as a description of important works, historical context, and general approach; illustrations include numerous drawings, photographs, and floor plans.
The book's A to Z entries cover not only architects but also groups, movements, and styles from the 18th to the 21st centuries.
With 600 entries, 5200 illustrations, and a glossary of architectural terms, The A to Z of Modern Architecture is a comprehensive resource that no architecture profession, fan, or student should be without.

The exhibition highlights sixteen one-family houses form a varied and fascinating whole in Aalto's extensive output.
In them the basic outlines of his architecture can be seen and the changes it underwent from the 1920s to the 1970s, but at the same time there is always a personal touch in them.
"There is an ulterior motive, too, in architecture, which is always peeping out from around the corner, the idea of creating paradise.
It is only purpose of our buildings.
If we do not carry this idea with us the whole time all our buildings would be simpler, more trivial and life would become - well, would life amount to anything at all?
Every building, every work of architecture, is a symbol which has the aspiration to show that we want to build a paradise on earth for ordinary mortals." - Alvar Aalto 1958
