![]() Grey to GreenA crisis looms. With less money and too much carbon, we need more people, with the right skills to manage the landscape of our towns and cities. Many green elements are already in place, but (like roads), their value lies in being networked. What is needed is a well-maintained and well-connected system of parks, gardens, waterways, allotments and tree-lined streets. This green infrastructure is a powerful weapon in the fight for stronger communities, healthier lives and a sustainable future. CABE will launch Grey to green on 11 November: a public debate to shift funding and skills from grey to green infrastructure. Landscape design is at the heart of great placemaking and is part of our cultural roots, from "Capability" Brown to the garden city movement. Speakers include Dan Pearson, a leading landscape designer with a growing international reputation. He will talk about the cultural value of green infrastructure, and what the special spirit of a place derives from. His recent projects include the London Maggie's Centre, which has just won the 2009 Stirling Prize. event (ended) current design events more info www.cab... ![]() Nationwide Sustainable Housing AwardsFollowing the success of its first student competition in 2008, Nationwide Building Society is launching the 2009/2010 Nationwide Sustainable Housing Awards.Working in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), this is the second in a series of annual competitions open to undergraduate architecture and design students. For 2009-2010 the theme is "Suburban Urban - secure and green" and prizes will be awarded for designs of an individual home, or group of homes, as well as the wider community in either new build or refurbishment projects. Wayne Hemingway MBE of Hemingway Design will announce the winners of each category at an awards ceremony in June 2010. As a leading provider of funds for social housing and the UK's third largest mortgage provider, Nationwide wishes to promote social, economic and environmental sustainability in housing. ![]() Not Business as Usual: A Guide to Government Incentive Programs for Small BusinessThe economy has changed radically throughout the world in the last year. The impact has been strongly felt in the design community in New York City: projects have been put on hold or altogether stopped, new commissions are not readily forthcoming; and firms have begun, in turn, to downsize. Many of our colleagues are losing their jobs while young professionals are not being hired. The "Not Business as Usual" program focuses on what design professionals need to do now for themselves and their firms. The program is a compilation of information about a number of New York City, state and federal assistance programs that are available to the New York business community. The session included a description of qualifications / eligibility requirements, benefits, fees and information for several government incentives that exist. event (ended) current design events more info cfa.aia...
