Architect David Adjaye has unveiled his first visual arts building.
Rivington Place, which will open its doors to the public tomorrow, is also the first public gallery in London since the Hayward Gallery opened in 1968.
The volume of the building has similar proportions to the warehouse that previously occupied the space.
The unusual lattice pattern was influenced by Sowei masks of Sierra Leone.
The shape affects the internal space by creating windows that are positioned at different heights.
In larger spaces the windows create an ambiguous sense of scale as their position and size contradict the effects of perspective.
The building houses two visual arts organisations Iniva and Autograph ABP.
The gallery is also the country's first to be dedicated to showcasing work from differing cultural perspectives.

REthink Development (REthink), a leader in the emerging industry of eco-real estate development, breaks ground this month on Cherokee Lofts, the first of several ambitious and progressive mixed-use and commercial developments.
By mixing the right technology and design innovation, REthink strives to create high-performance buildings that respect both people and planet.
Founded by sustainable design expert Greg Reitz and real estate entrepreneur Steve Edwards, REthink takes a holistic approach to development that integrates context, sustainability, and history to create contextually relevant developments that offer more value for owners, operators, and inhabitants.
"We're thrilled to break ground on Cherokee Lofts," said REthink Principal and former Green Building Advisor for the City of Santa Monica Greg Reitz.
"This is the first of several planned highperformance mixed-use projects that we feel will offer all stakeholders - buyers, operators, and investors - a much-needed urban live + work alternative to the norm."
"As population continues to increase and concentrate in urban areas, people will need healthy and efficient housing solutions, businesses will need productive spaces, and investors will need to seek out real estate projects that will continue to perform in the long-run," explained REthink Co-Founder and Principal Steve Edwards.
"We hope to meet all of these pressing and convergent needs with REthink development projects."

Today marks the inauguration at Trofarello (Turin) of "Insegna", the new CEAN training center, with interior design by Pininfarina Extra, the Pininfarina Group company specialized in product and interior design.
"Insegna", an extremely modern, fully-equipped training environment, has been set up in the building that, for many years, has housed the Academy Market offices and experimental laboratory of CEAN, a services company specialized in the design and construction of supermarkets and shops: the Center aims to inform, prepare, motivate and involve sales-point staff through the organization of training courses.
Italian franchisee business partners of the Carrefour Italia Group will also be trained at the Trofarello center.
The architecture of the Center, where the dominant color is white, is characterized by soft, sinuous walls.
Curved structures also for the reception area and the counter of the bar area.
Extensive glazing guarantees a brightly-lit environment, further reinforced by light wood floors and aluminum trimmings.
The heart of the structure is the conference hall, equipped with an innovative lighting system and fitted with Xten seats for the table of the speakers designed by Pininfarina for Ares Line.
The demo areas are equipped with refrigerated counters designed by Pininfarina for Pastorfrigor.
With the "Insegna" project, Pininfarina explores the sector of architecture design.

The Rice Design Alliance (RDA) and AIA Houston announce a two-stage national competition to design a sustainable, affordable house that addresses the needs of the low-income family in the Gulf Coast region.
The competition objectives are to broaden awareness of green building strategies applicable to affordable housing, generate and publicize buildable examples of sustainable, affordable houses, and construct an exemplary sustainable, affordable house prototype.
The competition challenges designers and architects to design a sustainable, affordable house.
Special consideration should be given to affordability, longevity, energy savings benefits, and appropriateness for the hot, humid climate of Houston.
The City of Houston has donated a site for the house through the Land Assemblage Redevelopment Authority (LARA) initiative.
The lot is located in Houston's historic Fifth Ward, a residential area east of downtown.
The competition is a two-stage project to be completed in 2008.
Stage I will be an international design competition for a single-family house with up to 1,400 SF, including three bedrooms and one-and-a-half to two bathrooms.
The construction budget is up to $99,000.
Deadline for submissions is January 14, 2008.
The Jury will select three finalists who will each receive a stipend of $5,000 and will be expected to produce construction drawings.
