Autodesk Sponsors Leading Sustainable Design Documentary Series

Autodesk Sponsors Leading Sustainable Design Documentary Series

Autodesk continues its efforts to drive sustainable design awareness and adoption through the sponsorship of a documentary series that will air nationwide this fall on PBS, distributed internationally and also available via web cast.

e2 energy features groundbreaking efforts to design a more energy- efficient world, and e2 design, in its second season, showcases innovative sustainable design through architecture around the world.

Autodesk is supporting the series for the second consecutive year as part of the company's ongoing initiative to increase awareness of the importance of sustainable design as an important solution to global environmental challenges.

"As a global design software provider, Autodesk is committed to providing technology, education and support for innovative projects that help architects, engineers and designers create a more sustainable future through smart design," said Carl Bass, president and chief executive officer, Autodesk.

"By partnering with kontentreal, we hope to engage the public and raise awareness about the environmental and energy challenges and the positive role sustainable design can play."

Narrated by actor Morgan Freeman, e2 energy explores topics including innovations in transportation, using wind to harvest energy and Brazil's success using ethanol as an alternative fuel.

RIBA Publishes Climate Change Guidance for Architects and Consumers

RIBA Publishes Climate Change Guidance for Architects and Consumers

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) launched a suite of climate change guidance documents for architects and consumers.

The guidance documents, known collectively as the RIBA Climate Change Toolkit, are primarily aimed at the construction industry though the first guide in the series - the Climate Change Briefing - is designed to have a broad, non-professional appeal.

The RIBA Climate Change Toolkit consists of the following three downloadable PDFs, also available as A4 printed documents, alongside A5 summary versions: Climate Change Briefing, Guide to Low Carbon Performance Methods and Assessment Methods and Guide to Low Carbon Design Tools.

Three further climate change guides - a Carbon Literacy Briefing, Guide to The Principles of Low Carbon Design and Refurbishment and Guide to Low Carbon Skills and Training - will be published over the following six months to complete a suite of six documents.

The RIBA Climate Change Toolkit has been produced by a specialist consultant on behalf of the RIBA.

Transformations The Architecture of Penoyre Prasad

Transformations: The Architecture of Penoyre & Prasad

Following almost 20 years in practice, comes Penoyre & Prasad's first monograph, Transformations.

One of the UK's leading architectural practices, Penoyre & Prasad are renowned for buildings that are centred on people's experience, are green and visually striking.

Transformations provides a comprehensive overview of the practice, their approach and their work, in their own words.

With an introduction by Tom Muirhead, the book comprises eight essays written by Sunand Prasad: Purpose; Care; Art; Construction; Time; Limits; Learning and Context.

Through these, Prasad details the positions and influences that have informed the practice's approach, reveals their way of working and their exchange with current and historic architectural culture.

Interspersed throughout these essays are case studies that explore 25 key projects from the practice's wide ranging portfolio, including Rushton Street Medical Centre, The Millenium Centre at Eastbrookend Country Park, Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Moorfields Eye Hospital, The University of Portsmouth Library and Olney School.

Written with clients and users in mind, Transformations strikes a balance between communicating to nonspecialists whilst retaining the depth of the subject of architecture.

Leo a Daly and Conron Woods Design New LEED-registered Building for State of New Mexico

Leo a Daly and Conron & Woods Design New LEED-registered Building for State of New Mexico

The design for the new Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) headquarters, which is a collaborative effort of the Phoenix office of LEO A DALY, the international architecture, planning, engineering, interior design and program management firm, and Conron & Woods Architects of Santa Fe, N.M., was recently completed.

The environmentally sensitive building, which will be located in Santa Fe, is projected to achieve a certification level of LEED Silver in the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for New Construction (NC) rating system.

The sustainable design for the State of New Mexico building is notable for its beneficial use of indigenous materials and technologies.

The design uses a modern interpretation of historical and cultural influences, local geographic features, vegetation, and indigenous building techniques as inspiration.

In plan, the 35,000 square-foot building grows from its central courtyard much like a native yucca plant growing from its core.

In form, the building was envisioned to echo the timeless presence of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Santa Fe.

Solid, twenty-four inch thick rammed-earth walls (a building technique which traces its roots back 1,000 years to an adaptation of native adobe architecture) wrap the exterior of the building and create a sense of permanence, stability, and protection.

The use of multiple courtyards, a feature commonly found throughout the region, allows light to penetrate into the building and provides a sense of connection to the outside environment.

Housing in Eastern Europe From Sofia to Tallinn

Housing in Eastern Europe: From Sofia to Tallinn

Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Slovenia - all countries now belonging to the European Union - were communist dictatorships prior to the political upheaval of the early 1990s.

Private contractors and developers were unknown, the word "mortgage" didn't exist and the land register was largely ineffective.

Housing in Eastern Europe reports in words and images on the quest for a new arrangement of housing in these former Eastern bloc countries.

The many conversations with those involved raised a welter of questions.

Who are the new housing entrepreneurs? Are housing corporations a new phenomenon on the rise?

Is urban renewal as hot an item as it is in the West? Is much thought being given to architecture?

Is there really so much poverty in rural areas? Is there an IKEA yet? How do first-time buyers find a home?

And what's happening to the billions being poured into the region by Western Europe?

Traces of history can be felt and seen in the stories in these pages.

A separate chapter is devoted to the principal index numbers for each country.
