Zaha Hadid Architecture Foundation Building CancelledPlans for a London building designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning, Baghdad-born architect Zaha Hadid have been dropped as a result of the credit crunch that began with the subprime mortgage collapse.
The building was to have been the first permanent one in Britain by Ms. Hadid, who is known for bold, unconventional forms and was chosen last month to design the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
The $10 million London structure, scheduled for completion in July 2009, was to have served as headquarters for the Architecture Foundation.
The Evening Standard in London reported that senior members of the foundation said they were unable to guarantee sufficient money from donors to cover the costs because of "economic nervousness" and a stock market slump.
Ms. Hadid called the decision "disappointing."
