 Design flaw caused bridge to crackStructural repair on two bridges on Route 422 is the tip of the iceberg for officials who have determined the damage is caused by a design flaw affecting 40 bridges throughout the state.
When the bridges were designed in 1965, both the designers and the manufacturers had no idea the beams under the bridge could develop cracks.
"They simply didn't know. They didn't understand," said Chuck Davies, district bridge engineer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
