A New SkylineSan Francisco planners want to clear the way for as many as a dozen towers that would rise near the Bay Bridge -- creating a new southern skyline and dramatically altering views of downtown.
In an area known as Rincon Hill, a two-by-six-block wedge from Folsom Street south to the bridge, loading docks outnumber storefronts. But if the plan now in the works is approved, as many as 4,700 housing units could be added. Some new towers could be 40 stories, twice as high as anything now there.
Two of the proposed towers would replace the digital clock tower that faces the bridge, long a landmark to commuters.
These changes could affect the look and feel of San Francisco as profoundly as any planning decision of the past 30 years.
