School Design Affects LearningIn their quest to save money by building schools from standardized designs, officials do not need to skimp on creativity, a Salt Lake City architect told a legislative task force Friday.
"There are plenty of examples of [bad] standard designs -- long hallways, lots of glass panels -- they look like factories" said Steve Crane, who is a member of the Council of Educational Facility Planners.
Not only are the buildings ugly, they tend to be inefficient and uninspiring to students and teachers, Crane said.
The panel called upon the architect to look into the possibilities after Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, suggested that school officials adopt a cookie-cutter design for schools similar to the way the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints builds it chapels.
Crane said he researched more than 200 journals and studies for his presentation. He found evidence that learning is affected by such aesthetic qualities as natural light, acoustics, ventilation, age, condition and building size.
"It costs as much to buy pink and yellow paint as it does to do all the walls in white," he said.
