No Wins for Bridge Design CompetitionA design competition for two pedestrian bridges to link up hill parks in southern Singapore drew 65 international and local entries - but none won.
Some had refreshing ideas, said the judges - curved bridges, columnless structures and undulating forms - but did not appear strong enough to support, say, a mass event like a marathon.
On the other hand, those with good structures did not wow the five-member panel with their design.
But Singaporeans will get a 250m-long bridge connecting Mount Faber to Telok Blangah Hill Park - which will be the longest pedestrian bridge here - and a 1km bridge and walkway linking Alexandra and Telok Blangah Hill parks.
The firms behind the five entries which got merit awards will be interviewed to determine which designs can move from drawing board to physical form.
Expected to cost a total of $12 million to $14 million, the bridges and walkway are part of a plan to give greater access to a 9km chain of hills stretching from Mount Faber Park to Kent Ridge Park.
The parks are popular destinations as they contain look-out points, a landscaped garden and nature walks.
National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan, who handed out the awards yesterday, said: 'I'm confident that at the end of this process, we'll have a set of bridges that are aesthetically pleasing and yet safe and cost
