Design Specialists Export Their SkillsThe expertise of Teesside workers is being exported to South America.
For Thornaby office of project management and engineering design consultancy White Young Green is to plays a key part in a £120m project in Brazil.
The commission, from the blast furnace division of VAI (UK) Industries will draw on WYG's civil and structural experience gained on numerous similar heavy steel plant schemes both in the UK and at Monclova in Mexico, Kwang Yang in South Korea and Acominas, also in Brazil.
VAI (UK) Industries has recently won, against international competition, the main contract for a £120m blast furnace project in Vitoria, Brazil, around 200 miles north of the Rio de Janeiro, for Companhia Siderurgica de Tubarao (CST).
The delivery of the contract will be split between VAI (UK) and its Brazilian subsidiary in Belo Horizonte, where the major project co-ordination office will be based.
As part of the contract, the design and preparation of drawings for heavy structural steelwork for the cast house and stoves areas of the new plant has been awarded to WYG's Teesside office, which employs 60.
The cast house will be the base for the new blast furnace and support large travelling cranes, plant and ancillary equipment. The steel structure will sit on an elevated concrete platform some 11m above the surrounding ground. T
