Gensler Architecture: Design Team for New Detroit TerminalAt a special meeting this morning, members of the Wayne County Airport Authority board voted to approve a contract with the Detroit office of Gensler Architecture, Design & Planning, a global architecture and design firm. The contract, valued at $32.8 million, is to provide architectural, design and engineering services for the new North Terminal Redevelopment project at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
The North Terminal Redevelopment project will build a new passenger terminal facility designed to serve airlines currently operating out of Detroit's dated L.C. Smith Terminal, including Air Canada, American, America West, Independence Air, Spirit, Southwest, US Airways, United Airlines and perhaps others. The project, which will feature new shops and restaurants, shorter walking distances and improved parking and luggage claim operations, will include up to 29 gates. Other design considerations will be for luggage and security systems, roadways to tie-in to the new facility, hydrant fueling operations and expandability to allow for future additional service from new or existing air carriers.
