The Imperial War Museum North Has Design Award In Its SightsThe Imperial War Museum North has been shortlisted for another design award.
The £30m "shattered earth" building on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal is one of six which are now fighting it out for the prestigious Stirling Prize, awarded annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
It is handed out to the building which has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year. The winner of the prize, which includes a cheque for £20,000, will be announced on October 16.
The building, in Trafford docks was the work of architect Daniel Libeskind, who has since won the competition to replace the Twin Towers in New York.
His vision for IWM North was of a world shattered by war and put back together through human endeavour and ingenuity to form the distinctive shape of the building.
The free-to-enter museum has attracted more than 750,000 visitors since it opened two years ago.
It has already won a string of awards including a best building gong last year from the construction industry for its "stupendous design".
