Robin Gibson Plans Moral Stand on Arts CentreQueensland architect Robin Gibson will consider invoking his "moral rights" under copyright law to block redevelopment of his signature project, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
Mr Gibson issued the warning as Arts Minister Anna Bligh revealed that an emerging masterplan for QPAC would review "all physical aspects" of the riverfront building.
The row will personally embarrass Premier Peter Beattie given he is due today to open a new entrance for the adjoining Queensland Museum designed by Mr Gibson – a job dismissed by the veteran architect as being a "token gesture".
It brings to a head long-simmering discontent by Mr Gibson at what he regards as the destruction of his original vision for the cultural precinct on central Brisbane's South Bank.
Ms Bligh – also due to attend today's opening – has left open the much-discussed option of QPAC being re-oriented with a new central entrance off its east-facing river side.
Under Mr Gibson's design, entry to the performance halls is from either end or through the Box Office area beneath.
"It's the straw that breaks the camel's back," he said. "You can be insulted a fair way, but at the end of the day there must be mischief afoot to even think about this."
Ms Bligh insisted that the "building is ageing and requires changes".
