DDI Survey Finds That Selfridges, Birmingham, England, Rules in Store DesignSelfridges in Birmingham, England showcases the best in recent retail store design, while Wal-Mart, despite its stellar record for sales, is one of the worst-designed stores in today's retail arena, according to a recent DDI reader survey.
Published in the September 2004 Book of Lists, DDI readers were asked to select the retailers, designers and projects they thought represented the best designs of the industry in the past year. Selfridges in the United Kingdom, designed by London-based Future Systems, was selected as No.1 in DDI's 2004 Book of Lists--with the most votes from readers. Selfridges took first place honors in categories for "best new retail spaces," "most unique store" and "most innovative retailer."
Brazilian fashion boutique Carlos Miele in New York also received wide recognition. It was designed by New York-based Asymptote, which is new this year to the list of "most exciting design firms." Canadian design firm Yabu Pushelberg, which designed Amore Pacific in New York, is ranked as the "most exciting design firm" for the third year in a row.
