Green Campus Design of The FutureIf the Dakota County Technical College campus were designed today, what would it look like? Instructor Matt Brooks would love to answer that question.
“It’s all about sustainability, 221; Brooks said.
Brooks took a sabbatical last year to complete a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota. For his capstone project, Brooks redesigned the campus of Dakota County Technical College (DCTC), where he has worked for eight years. Brooks created plans based on principles of image and aesthetics as well as energy saving techniques, forming a “green campus.”
“It kind of went from this plan of how can we fix up the grounds to make it look nicer, to how we can chart the course of this college over the next 50 years to really have it become known as a center for sustainable technologies,̶ 1; Brooks said.
Brooks defined sustainability as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future.
“We must continue to look at alternative forms of energy as well as develop sustainable environments,̶ 1; said DCTC President Ron Thomas. “The state of Minnesota has been a national leader in this field and I am pleased to report that DCTC is currently updating its master facilities plan with Wold Architects and Engineers and hopes to incorporate some of the green campus concepts into the campus.”
