Raleigh Convention Center Design Given The Go-AheadIt's official. The $200 million Raleigh Convention Center has its look.
On Thursday, Wake County and city leaders gave the nod to the building's contemporary design.
"It's big, it's a very big building,” said designer Thomas Sayre. “It spans an entire block."
The 500,000 square foot center will be three stories, have a tower and ballroom.
"The designs turned out really very well, particularly on the Salisbury Street side, the plaza there,” said Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker. “There's a lot of stone, limestone involved as well as glass and lights. There’s going to be a pretty setting."
"I like the design in that it makes it available to the public,” observed Wake County Commissioner Tony Gurley. “It's a functional design."
Even though the plan passed unanimously, not everyone is crazy about the design.
"I thought perhaps there should be some other things that might be done in terms of rounding out the building,” said Wake County Commissioner Betty Lou Ward.
According to Raleigh City Councilman Thomas Crowder, “My major concern is the form of the roof. We're trying to make a grand gesture. We're not quite there. We're getting half way to that grand gesture."
