New Design for an Old RoomThe one thing missing from where many of us do laundry is room. But that's changing, as more homes feature spacious, attractive laundry centers that double as mud or project rooms.
"The laundry room is coming out of the closet," says Jim Newell, director of marketing for Indianapolis-based HH Gregg Appliances & Electronics.
And it's moving out of the basement to near the kitchen or family room on the first floor, or up to the second floor near the bedrooms and bathrooms where laundry accumulates.
To see the height of laundry-room luxury, visit Indianapolis Monthly's Builder/Designer Showhome at 106th Street and Spring Mill Road, open Nov. 6-21. The 10,000-plus-square -foot home features not one, but two, expansive laundry rooms.
The first-floor space is off a wide hallway connecting the three-car attached garage to the kitchen. Decorated in mossy greens and warm golds, it's fitted with a custom-designed, two-toned wood island, perfect for folding laundry, wrapping gifts or creating craft projects. A granite countertop runs the length of one wall, with a front-loading washer and dryer tucked beneath and plenty of cabinets and drawers. On the opposite wall, a painted figure of an old-fashioned housekeeper adds a whimsical touch.
