Design - Build TrendMore and more local construction projects are being built using a method called design/build.
The Heartland Events Center is being built this way. At least two of three coming city projects -- a library expansion and fire station -- are being planned as design/build projects.
But what is design/build and what makes it such an attractive option?
Design/build itself is not a new concept. It has been taught for decades in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Construction Management, but became its very own course in the last four years due to the growing popularity of the technique.
"About 50 percent of all projects are now design/build," said UNL Professor Gene Wright, who teaches the university's design/build courses.
Design/build, most simply put, is a way to get everyone involved in a construction project on the team at the beginning.
Instead of the traditional method of hiring an architect to draw up plans, issuing the plans for a bid from a contractor, and then having the project built, the architect and contractor are hired simultaneously.
"It puts the contractor and architect together as a team," Wright said.
That team concept is one that can translate into a quicker project, better design and more efficient cost, Wright said.
