Firm Wins Award for UCSC Building DesignArchitects like the new Engineering 2 building at UC Santa Cruz.
The building, which opened this fall, was among 14 completed projects honored for design by the American Institute of Architects Los Angeles chapter.
Anshen + Allen Los Angeles designed the building, which added 150,000 square feet of office, laboratory and classroom space at UCSC, primarily for Baskin School of Engineering.
The project also included a 212-seat auditorium and an open plaza between the two engineering buildings on campus.
Winning projects represent "the cutting edge in contemporary architecture," according to the American Institute of Architects.
A large expanse of windows and generous use of wood are two key elements of the UCSC project. The award jury praised the use of different materials.
Jurors included architects Toshiko Mori, dean at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard; Jim Jennings of San Francisco; and Dan Hanganu of Montreal.
"Anshen + Allen’s ability to meet a series of unforgiving deadlines and to produce an award-winning project simultaneously is an especially noteworthy accomplishment," said campus architect Frank Zwart.
"It moved from initial design to occupancy in just over three years, a feat probably unmatched in the history of construction at UCSC," Zwart said, crediting cooperation among the archite
