The Winners of the Waltham Forest Design Awards 2004The winners of the Waltham Forest Design Awards 2004 were announced at a ceremony last week in the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow.
The awards highlighted schemes around the borough that have demonstrated excellent design and have helped to improve the local environment both practically and aesthetically.
There were three categories - best new building, best environmental improvement and best restoration.
The winner of best new building was Hiltongrove Business Centre in Walthamstow created by Blackwell Friend Architects. A commendation went to Mayville School, Mayville Road, Leytonstone, designed by IID Architects.
The winner of the best environmental improvement building was Walthamstow town square and gardens designed by Building Design Partnership. A commendation went to the access ramp at St John the Baptist Church on the corner of Church Lane and Leytonstone High Road.
The winner of the best restoration building was the conversion of the Chingford Hall Community Campus designed by Cullinan and Buck Architects. A commendation went to Manze's Pie and Mash Shop in Walthamstow market, with the award being presented to owner Josephine Rose.
Twelve schemes were nominated for the awards and they were assessed by a panel of judges.
