Freedom by Design: American Institute of Architecture StudentsGiving comes in many forms, and fortunately we have many generous people in our city who work or volunteer all year to make miracles happen for those less fortunate.
One of the newest community service projects is Arizona State University's American Institute of Architecture Students' program, aptly named "Freedom by Design."
"Basically, it is a non-profit organization made up of national chapters that provides pro bono design and construction solutions to the low-income disabled community," said Michelle Acosta, 21, a senior architecture student from Scottsdale who serves as a team captain for the group.
"We can do projects for any client that owns their own home and has trouble getting around, no matter what their age or disability. They don't necessarily have to be in a wheelchair, although the program has built a number of ramps."
Acosta said the program was started in Denver about five years ago by an architect named Brad Buchanan. He was unhappy with existing community service programs because he felt they didn't allow architects to contribute as much of their skills as they would like to, so he founded Freedom by Design, giving architects a more practical way to give back to the community.
