India Government Working on National Design PolicyGovernment is formulating a national design policy to address various issues like design parameters, quality certifications and new degree-level courses in the field.
"We had a consultation in Delhi recently to discuss the areas we should cover in the policy. Government is keen to push design industry and promote Indian brands in the global arena," Joint Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Anthony De Sa, said at a press conference here today.
Currently, India has a negligible share of less than one per cent in the global Rs 500 bn market.
"Very few people know that design plays an important role in the economy of a country and is an indication of the technological and creative level of any culture," he said, adding the policy is likely to define government's role in the promotion of this industry.
"We can also introduce certifications and parameters for good design. National Institute of Design gives diplomas in design but now we can explore pros and cons of degree-level courses in the field," he said.
"Like in Information Technology, government can also offer incentives in the sector to bring more and more people in the forefront," CII's principal advisor Y S Rajan said.
