Seattle Central Library Recognized by the American Institute of ArchitectsSeattle's new Central Library is one of 13 buildings to receive 2005 Honor Awards for Outstanding Architecture from the American Institute of Architects.
The bold library, which was designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture of Rotterdam and LMN Architects of Seattle, also was recently named as Time magazine's outstanding building of 2004.
Two Northwest residences also received AIA honor awards -- the Agosta House on San Juan Island and the Shaw House in Vancouver, B.C.
Both were designed by the Patkau Architects of Vancouver. The 2005 AIA honor awards were selected from more than 400 submissions by architectural firms licensed in the United States.
The award jury that selected Seattle's Central Library praised the much-celebrated Rem Koolhaas design for producing "a building that works spectacularly, suggesting that function and high design can coexist comfortably."
