Design on ClassWhile most Secondary three students were having lessons at the start of the new academic year, the pioneer batch of Integrated Programme (IP) students at Temasek Academy was busy designing their own classrooms - from scratch.
Given a budget of $4,000, each of the five classes were given four days to conceptualise their classroom design, produce videos of the process and give a presentation to explain the design.
The Homeroom Challenge was part of the school's attempt to promote innovation and enterprise.
Said Temasek Junior College principal Lim Lai Cheng: "Those are the key traits which people are looking for in the new economy. So we are trying to use such activities to get our young people engaged in innovation."
More activities that aim to broaden the learning landscape for the 122 IP students are in store.
To execute such projects, the school is actively roping in organisations as sponsors. Italia Synthesis Design and Idea Factory were the two main sponsors for the Homeroom Challenge. Furniture giant Ikea also chipped in by providing cardboard for the students' designs.
In the pipeline is a project with Idea Factory, a consultancy that aids schools and corporations with branding, to help Levi's reinvent their jeans next month.
