Green Design Can Help Conserve DollarsFive years ago, it would have been quite challenging to find a list of environmentally friendly building products and materials. Today, libraries, bookstores and the Internet are overloaded with information about green building products and materials.
Brattleboro, Vt.-based BuildingGreen Inc.'s recently released GreenSpec Directory of environmentally preferable building products and materials includes more than 1,850 listings that designers, builders and building owners can use in identifying products to improve the environmental performance of their buildings.
The increased availability of a diverse range of such products and building materials is helping architects and engineers to take green design to the next level.
Every major architectural and design firm today has someone on their team with expertise in green design or engineering, or certified with "Leadership In Energy & Environmental Design" designation. The LEED program, administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Members of the U.S. Green Building Council representing all segments of the building industry developed this unique program.
