A Green LibraryMusic, poetry and speakers kicked off the idea of a "green design" library for Fargo on March 8 at the Howard Johnson Inn.
South Agassiz Resource Council held the kick-off event to introduce the idea of using environmentally friendly construction to build Fargo's new library.
"Green" design includes design and construction practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and occupants in five broad areas.
Those areas include: sustainable site planning, safeguarding water and water efficiency, energy efficiency and renewable energy, conservation of materials and resources and indoor environmental quality.
Jennifer Burke, a fourth-year architecture student at NDSU who attended the meeting, said that sustainable design is a "thing of the future."
"People who care about the environment and notice the human impact on our non-renewable resources are going to put Fargo ahead," Burke said.
"It's not only about the people, though - it's about caring about the environment. I think that the library will show other potential builders that changing little things can make a big difference ... it's great."
The U.S. Green Building Council and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System are groups that make these projects happen.
