Architects Faking it for Museum

Architects Faking it for Museum

A competition to design a museum which will never be built is exercising the minds of Manchester architects.

The contest to come up with plans for the Manchester Letherium has become one of the greatest challenges to the world's architects.

Some have spent days and nights sweating over their vision of the Letherium, which is the name given to the imaginary museum 'proposed' for the junction of Princess Street and Whitworth Street.

The winner will be announced on April Fools' Day - which is appropriate, as the Letherium will never be built.

Not one brick of the winning design will ever be laid, despite a competition website which details exactly where it will be built, what would go in it and what the judges are looking for.

The website is all a fake, right down to the name of the fictional competition organisers, Manchester Letherium Corporation (MLC).

It is all the work of Canadian Manchester-based artists Rebecca Duclos and David Ross. Rebecca said: "We wanted to give architects the chance to design something without the usual constraints of budgets or local authority involvement."

Even though some of the finest, award-winning architectural minds have been testing themselves by submitting designs, their efforts will never leave the page. The winner will simply have the satisfaction of being chosen as the best.
