Green Architrends: Green Architecture and The Efficient Use of WaterAbout 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water. This gives many people the wrong impression that we have an abundant supply of water. In reality, only three percent is fresh, flowing through rivers, lakes and underground streams, while two percent of it is in polar ice.
In environment-consci ous countries, they are very concerned about what is discharged into their drainage system. Some even provide a settling tank beside the garage to filter oil and other chemicals that are washed down when cleaning the cars.
Apart from pollution of our water supply, we have also been very wasteful in using water. In areas where water is scarce, such as cities and vacation resorts, water is frequently used excessively.
Green buildings are sustainable buildings. They are built to have minimal impact on the environment particularly with regard to the use of natural resources. In the case of water, green buildings use water efficiently by collecting, reusing and returning water back to the environment.
Green architecture may not provide all the answers to the worldwide water crisis, but it can offer many effective ways to help avert the crisis. How?
