New Designs Approved for Mgarr TerminalThe Malta Environment and Planning Authority yesterday unanimously approved an application for the construction of a sea passenger terminal for the Gozo ferry service and associated works at Mgarr harbour.
The designs will supersede those approved in a previous development application. The main changes include a reorganisation of access routes, a reduction in size and height of the terminal building and a change in its external appearance.
The application was approved against a number of conditions including that public access to the fishing crafts basin be maintained to the satisfaction of Mepa.
The previously approved terminal consisted of a rectangular two-storey building surrounded by glazing and capped with an undulating tiled roof. The building was distinct and defined in its location on the quay.
Mepa heard yesterday that on the other hand, the building proposed in yesterday's application is very discreet.
It utilises the level created by an underground parking area and raised marshalling area. It hugs the site and blends with the quay's built-up landscape. A viewing tower has been integrated in the terminal building design. It is proposed to accommodate a small office and has a profile similar in appearance to a ship's funnel.
The new building will be a considerable improvement on the design previously
