Mexicali Residential Building by Ten ArquitectosMexicali Residential Building is located at a dense mixed use zone and surrounded by parks, cafés, restaurants and several Art Déco influenced structures.
The 9 apartment building is located at the intersection of two streets with opposite characters: Mexicali and Cholula in Condesa, Mexico City.
The project is composed by a glass volume inserted into a concrete volume.
The thick shell is punctured in different heights and places, depending on the interior space of activity.
The 6 apartments sheltered by Mexicali's street façade maintain the same height as the neighboring buildings, but a solid concrete wall with its random glass openings makes a strong contrast with the existing context.
Due to the traffic on this street, the building looks to its interior to provide privacy.
The opposite happens with Cholula's façade, which opens through the double height windows of the 3 larger apartments.
This double skinned façade reflects what happens in its interior through concrete screens that not only control the natural light and views, but emphasize the terrace, living room, and bedroom spaces, while the rest of the apartment opens up to the quiet street.
Thanks to the flexible plan, the space can be divided to create a new bedroom or studio.
