Stout Wins Competition to Design Edmonton GalleryA sweeping, graceful design by Los Angeles architect Randall Stout has been chosen for a multimillion-dolla r expansion of the Edmonton Art Gallery.
Stout's design was chosen from a short list of four international architects, including British architect Will Alsop, Iraqi-born Zaha Hadid and Vancouver's Arthur Erickson.
The $48-million upgrade is slated to start in 2007.
Stout, designer of art museums in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Roanoke, West Virginia, also has projects in Australia, Europe and Asia.
His design uses sculptural forms to draw viewers into the Edmonton gallery and link the old exhibit space with the new.
Part of Stout's vision is to turn the Churchill LRT station into a grand entryway to the gallery.
The design's centrepiece is a twisted ribbon of steel which wraps all the way around the building.
Stout says his design reflects the community of Edmonton.
"I think you can certainly look at this and think about the notion of the river running through Edmonton and you can look at this and think of the northern lights," he says.
The current downtown building was designed by local architect Don Bittorf in 1968 and the gallery has outgrown its space.
The size of the building increases from 50,000 to 80,000 square feet.
Exhibition space will grow from 16,000 to 35,000 square
