Beatson Oncology Centre by Hypostyle

The £87m project, located adjacent to the Beatson's existing Tom Wheldon Unit at Gartnavel Hospital, is thought to be the biggest Treasury-funded new hospital building in Scotland.

Hypostyle, supported by Ryder HKS, led the shadow design team engaged in the development of a design proposal for this complex healthcare facility, culminating in the preparation of a comprehensive set of Employers Requirements including a detailed exemplar design solution.

The five level scheme includes; three floors of inpatient wards; a varied patient and family information service; outpatient and day-care units; state of the art scanning and treatment equipment and clinical trials and research space.

The project specifications promote the creation of a therapeutic environment akin to that pioneered by the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital.

It is planned to engage a resident artist to assist the project team in the co-ordination of design development inputs.

Substantial support has also been recieved from a number of charities, whose input is focused on the enhancement of the internal environment and patient experience.

Construction is started in July 2004.

The building will be completed and operational by 2007.
