A Hospital that Doesn't Feel Like a HospitalLondon's first new children's hospital in over 100 years, the Evelina Children's Hospital, at St Thomas Hospital, London was opened for patients on Monday 31st October 2005.
The 16,500m2 building, with a £41.8m construction cost, is the first example of Hopkins Architects' work in the healthcare sector.
The practice won an RIBA competition in 1999 to design a hospital that doesn't feel like a hospital, with a vision to greatly improve the patient, staff and visitor experience.
With £50m of funding from The Guy's & St Thomas' Charity additional funding from NHS sources (£10m).
Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust novated the design team, (RKW - healthcare strategists; Hoare Lea - Services Engineering; Buro Happold - Structural Engineering), to contractor MJ Gleeson.
The commitment of client and design team to architectural and clinical excellence and MJ Gleeson's dedication to quality construction has ensured that the early design concepts have been delivered largely intact.
Sir Jonathan Michael, Chief Executive of the Trust, says: "We wanted the new Evelina Children's Hospital to be much more than a landmark building on a landmark site.
