Work to Start Soon on Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge by Santiago CalatravaDirt will start flying this month to make way for the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, one of the three Calatrava bridges across the Trinity River in Dallas, officials say.
The $93 million bridge, to be built between the Continental Avenue and Union Pacific Railroad bridges, will link west Dallas and north Oak Cliff with downtown Dallas.
A groundbreaking is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Hall.
The first 2,000 people to arrive can hear architect Santiago Calatrava speak on his theory and inspiration for the 1,870-foot structure.
The official groundbreaking is planned for 4:30 p.m. on the Continental Bridge with entertainment and fireworks.
Formerly called the Woodall Rodgers Extension Bridge, the viaduct will be the first of three built across the Trinity River downtown.
It will include six lanes for traffic.
The signature portion of the bridge will be 1,280 feet long, and a 400-foot transverse arch will hold up the structure with cables.
The bridge is being funded in part by the city, but its contributions are capped at $28 million from bond funds approved by voters in 1998, officials said.
In November 1999, the Regional Transportation Council/Texas Transportation Commission Partnership approved $30 million for the bridge.
