Parker Durrant International: From Minneapolis to ChinaAfter winning an international design competition, Minneapolis-based Parker Durrant International (PDI) is designing a $36 million renovation and expansion of the Yellow Dragon Hotel in Hangzhou, China.
The expansion of the landmark hotel, which opened in 1982, will increase the hotel's space to 470,000 sq. ft., almost doubling its current size.
The project will add two new towers to the hotel's existing six-building complex.
While the site's current buildings are each six stories tall, one new tower will be 13 stories, and the other will be nine stories with longer-stay suites and a conference center on the lower floors.
Overall, the number of guest rooms will rise from 420 to 600.
The renovation also includes the refurnishing of guest rooms and public areas, including four restaurants, as well as the addition of two ballrooms and 300 below-grade parking stalls and 250 bicycle stalls.
With the expansion, however, come region-specific challenges.
In particular, China has stringent restrictions on shading of adjacent housing.
'Sunlight is considered critical to mental and physical well-being so buildings can't cast more than two hours of shadow a day on neighboring buildings,' says Francis Bulbulian, PDI project manager.
To expand daylight, the project will also make use of extensive skylights.
