David Macaulay: The Art of Drawing ArchitectureThe drawings of David Macaulay are powerful visual storytellers.
For more than 30 years, since the publication of his first book Cathedral in1973, they have unearthed "the way things work."
Trained as an architect, Macaulay has long been fascinated by large-scale constructions and his accessible illustrations teach viewers to see-and understand-archite cture.
Macaulay's unique brand of visual archeology not only peels back exterior façades and interior walls to reveal what is beneath them, but his drawings show us how a building is designed and constructed from the ground up, making the inaccessible, accessible.
This exhibition will feature Macaulay's original architectural drawings from Cathedral (1973), City (1974), Pyramid (1975), Underground (1976), Castle (1977), Unbuilding (1980), Mill (1983), Building Big (2000), and most recently, Mosque (2003).
The exhibition will explore the process behind the artistry of his work and focus on four elements that make Macaulay's drawings a success: his visual research, inventive perspectives, ability to reveal structural realities, and playful imagination.
Macaulay's fun and engaging style will also inform a series of family-friendly activities designed to reinforce each of the four main themes.
