NSCAD Students Take Designs to the StreetA group of art students has taken up the challenge to build an emergency shelter for less than $20.
The first-year students at NSCAD University had to use their design skills to create temporary shelters for the homeless.
"They all had to design for a single person, for an emergency use of some sort.
It could be in Halifax, it could be for an emergency in Bosnia," said Gene Daniels, the assistant professor behind the project, which was the final one of the year for the students.
A natural disaster like a tsunami or hurricane can leave thousands of people homeless in minutes.
Working in groups of three, the students had to come up with shelter designs that were lightweight and durable, yet didn't have to be assembled with tools.
The budget for materials was capped at $20.
