Universal Design Home: Securing The FutureStudents build a universal design home with access for all.
The house at 116 N.E. 113th St. looks like other nice, new suburban homes.
Inside it features a living room with a tall ceiling, a spacious kitchen and three bedrooms. Outside the siding is painted that light beige so many homebuyers like.
And that's what more than 50 North Kansas City School District students intended when they built and decorated this house -- they wanted it to look light, airy and appealing to most people.
"If I was going to buy a house, I'd buy one like this," says Adam Gerdes, an Oak Park High School senior, as he brushed some touch-up paint on the exterior of the house. "It's practical and more efficient."
Gerdes is referring to the barely noticeable details that make the house much different from most others in the metro area. The subtleties are part of what's known as universal design. Also known as lifetime design, the style is intended to let residents spend the rest of their
