Geometry of Motion 1920s1970s

Geometry of Motion 1920s/1970s

This exhibition considers the transformation of the art object from static image to light projection within two distinct artistic lineages: the unconventional optical techniques and social analyses of the 1920s Neue Optik, or "New Vision," generation of artists, among them László Moholy-Nagy, Hans Richter, and Marcel Duchamp; and the situational aesthetics advanced by Gordon Matta-Clark, Robert Smithson, and Anthony McCall in the 1970s.

Drawing attention to the conditions and complexities of perception-both within the framework of institutional display and in other surroundings - these artists have redefined the social potential of visual agency.

5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art When Things Cast No Shadow

5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art: When Things Cast No Shadow

When things cast no shadow, the 5th berlin biennial for contemporary art, curated by Adam Szymczyk and Elena Filipovic, brings together artists from different generations and nationalities in an exhibition by day and night that aims to trace the diversity of art practices today.

Eschewing a singular theme, form, or temporality, and determined instead by a critical engagement with artists' processes, When things cast no shadow could be said to take the form of an open structure in five movements without a plot.

The day part of the 5th berlin biennial will be on view at four distinct venues and include mostly newly commissioned works by 50 artists, while the night part of the show will feature still more artists and cultural producers in 63 nightly events taking place in locations spread across the once-divided city.

The exhibition spaces of KW Institute for Contemporary Art, founded in 1991 in Berlin-Mitte will hold, among other projects, films by Babette Mangolte, Michel Auder, and Patricia Esquivias as well as an intervention by Ahmet Öđüt that comments on state power and its means of control.

The attic will be turned into a studio/installation activated by Tris Vonna-Michell's storytelling.

The iconic glass hall of Mies van der Rohe's ultra-modernist Neue Nationalgalerie in former West Berlin has inspired various responses from artists.

Blood on Paper the Art of the Book

Blood on Paper: the Art of the Book

At a time when the notion of the book is challenged by the advent of the screen and computer, this exhibition aims to show the extraordinary ways in which the book has been treated by leading artists of today and the recent past.

Blood on Paper will focus on new and contemporary work, and on books where the artist has been the driving force in conception and design.

The past twenty years have seen outstanding work by some of the most influential and respected artists of our time.

The exhibition selects books which reveal both the creative process and the soul of the artist in question.

Some are iconic works which established the genre of the livre d'artiste after the Second World War; others are surprises from artists who are best known for their work with other sorts of material.

Formats and production methods vary enormously.

Some works show the virtuosity of traditional "hot metal" printing techniques, others take the commercially- produced book as the starting point of their statements, yet others produce stunning large-scale installations and sculptures.

Seen together, these artists' books show a truly astonishing inventiveness, many on display to the public for the first time.

Artists represented range from Matisse, Picasso and Braque to Anselm Kiefer, Anish Kapoor and Georg Baselitz.
