Deisel Wall 2008 Big Ideas Need Big Spaces

Deisel Wall 2008: Big Ideas Need Big Spaces

The 5th edition of the Diesel Wall art contest continues its tour around the world and reaches 4 new corners of the planet: Manchester (UK), Barcelona (Spain), Zurich (Switzerland) and NY (US).

Until July 11th '08, any creative, inspired person from any country in the world can apply online and submit his/her designs for the chance to feature in this new edition of the project... and conquer a Wall!

The artists will have total freedom in sending concepts: art is above all a means of unconstrained self-expression.

With this philosophy, Diesel created Diesel Wall 5 years ago, a competition dedicated to everyone, anywhere, offering the opportunity to change the urban landscape by showcasing art works on an extraordinary scale on monumental, freestanding vertical walls in the centres of world's most important cities.

The ultimate goal being to salvage what prominent precious public space is left.

Stadtbilder von Caracas bis Shanghai Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk

Stadtbilder von Caracas bis Shanghai: Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk

The Dutch photographer, Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk, who lives in Berlin, takes us on a tour through the cities of the 21st century.

The exhibition will present a selection of fascinating black/white and colour images of his extensive photographic oeuvre on urban views.

With a specific eye on the urban lifestyle Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk reports as subjective and sometimes ironic analyst about everyday life, people and architecture.

His photos are like stories, characteristic pictures of the city, in which the invisible, the political, becomes visible: Power, mass, speed, authority.

They tell us stories as diverse as the cities themselves.

Geometries Prints and Drawings from the Collection

Geometries: Prints and Drawings from the Collection

This exhibition, which will inaugurate newly opened galleries on the Museum's second floor, will survey the widespread and recurring impulse toward geometric abstraction in modern and contemporary art.

Artists representing various movements and geographical backgrounds will be featured, from the Cubist, Futurist, and Russian avant-garde artists of the 1910s and 1920s with their images of flat, intersecting planes, and floating shapes, through the investigations into reductive form and color by artists associated with Minimalism, Op art, and hard-edge abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s, to artists who have emerged in more recent years and continue to exploit the infinite potential of simple geometries.

Among the highlights will be several recent acquisitions, including major projects and series by Lyubov Popova, Sol Lewitt, and Mark Grotjahn.

Making It New The Art and Style of Sara and Gerald Murphy

Making It New: The Art and Style of Sara and Gerald Murphy

Sara and Gerald Murphy are best remembered as the captivating American expatriates who inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night.

This exhibition is the first to explore the couple's relationships with some of the pivotal figures in avant-garde circles in Paris in the 1920s.

Their legendary style-modern in its apparent simplicity and freedom from stifling social regimentation-was a touchstone for many artists, writers, and musicians of the period-among them their friends Fitzgerald, Fernand Leger, Pablo Picasso, Cole Porter, Ernest Hemingway, Serge Diaghilev, and Jean Cocteau.

Gerald Murphy himself was a brilliant and inventive painter, recognized by contemporary French critics for his American audacity.

Although he produced just a small body of work, many of his images anticipate Pop Art.

His seven surviving canvases are brought together here for the first time with paintings, watercolors, drawings, and photographs by artists within his circle-Picasso, Leger, Juan Gris, and Amedee Ozenfant.

Also included are a series of watercolors dedicated to Gerald and Sara by Leger; and photographs of the Murphy family and its circle by Man Ray.

Personal photographs, home movies, letters, and other memorabilia reveal the warmth, charm, and charisma of the family, and further bring this dynamic era to life.

Art in the Age of Steam Walker Art Gallery

Art in the Age of Steam: Walker Art Gallery

This major exhibition captures the excitement of the steam train in art from the earliest days, through the boom years of Victorian railways to the end of the line in the 1960s.

Art in the Age of Steam is the most wide-ranging exhibition yet held to look at how artists responded to the extraordinary impact that steam trains had on landscape and society.

It is one of the major highlights of Liverpool's European Capital of Culture year.

Around 100 paintings, photographs, prints and drawings from some of the world's greatest art collections come together in a dazzling display.
