A monumental figure in twentieth-century photography, Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) changed the course of the medium not only with his extraordinary photographs, but also with his passionate efforts to establish photography as a fine art and with his innovative publications and galleries.
After Stieglitz's death, his wife, the painter Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986), chose several institutions to receive representative gifts of his work, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
This 1949 gift laid the groundwork for the Museum's renowned and ever-growing collection of international photography, now numbering around 29,000 images.
This inaugural exhibition-in the Julien Levy Gallery's new location in the Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building-pays tribute to the Museum's treasured holding of the master's work with a selection of some of the finest prints from its bountiful collection of six hundred images by Stieglitz, many of them donated by his family and friends.
The exhibition concentrates on Stieglitz's work in several series throughout his career, revealing his consistent concentration on aspects of his own personal universe.

The Allure of Form is an exhibition presenting products and works by twelve designers and artisans from the South Savo region of Finland.
Falling in between design and art, these works consist of interior decoration and utility objects made partly as one-off items and partly in small series.
The exhibits share a playful spirit, rich ideas and the skilful use of recyclable materials.
The showing is an introduction to future marketing events and presentations involving the works of designers and artisans of the region.
The participants of the exhibition and its producer Henri Ulmanen will present their project to the press at 1 p.m. on Thursday 8 November 2007 at Design Forum, Erottajankatu 7.
The exhibition jury selected the participants of The Allure of Form on 8 February 2007, choosing twelve artisans and designers from among 25 candidates.
The jury consisted of internationally and nationally noted professionals in design, including director Birna Kristjansdottir of the Arnesinga Museum of Iceland, producer Laila Alanen of Design Forum Finland and Helena Hyvönen, professor of design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki.
The secretary of the jury was regional artist Henri Ulmanen, producer of the South Savo Arts Council and also the producer of the exhibition.

With new work and projects from over 50 California, Oregon and Washington designers and studios, New West Coast Design: Contemporary Objects offers an up-to-the-minute look at the many objects that have kept California, and its neighbors, at the forefront of innovation for nearly a half-century.
This exhibition will highlight a collection of the most exciting new designs for contemporary living currently emerging on the West Coast, including functional pieces for interiors, outdoor sports gear, and landscape design.
The breadth of work to be displayed will emphasize multiplicity of materials and objects, designed and fabricated by established and new artists in the field.
New materials worked into traditional forms highlight the works from San Francisco design studios Pablo, Council, and Meyerhoffer.
Exploring personal ideas of innovation are unique projects like Wendy Maruyama's digitally enhanced vanity, Wendell Jones' retro-Pop influenced coffee table, Kim Kelzer's turned-wood sculpture, Heath Matysek-Snyder's molded rubber table, Lee Miltier's lyrically hand-blown goblets and Alexis Moran's colored concrete bookends.
Also showcased will be Bruce Gordon's elegantly styled bicycle (winner of Best of Show 2007 North American Handmade Bicycle Show); Thomas Meyerhoffer's custom constructed surfboards; and Shinya Kimura's exquisitely updated motorcycle.

Malaysian painter Kow Leong Kiang holds a long-awaited solo exhibition of new works this November at Valentine Willie Fine Art.
Since winning the Grand Prize at the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (1998) with his controversial painting, "Mr. Foreign Speculator, Stop Damaging Our Country", the artist has gone on to create some of the most memorable images of rural Malaysia.
He is best known for his masterful portraits of East Coast beauty, capturing its pathos and nostalgia.
His new series of paintings mark a bold change in subject matter, and comprises a series of portraits of artists and writers he met during his residency at Vermont in 2004 - men and women from all over the world.
He takes on the challenge of addressing these cosmopolitan subjects, their friendship and their foreign-ness, with stunning new painterly approaches.
