Take Your Time Olafur Eliasson

Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson

Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson is the first comprehensive survey in the United States of works by Olafur Eliasson, whose immersive environments, sculptures, and photographs elegantly recreate the extremes of landscape and atmosphere in his native Scandinavia, while foregrounding the sensory experience of the work itself.

Drawn from collections worldwide, the presentation spans fifteen years of Eliasson's career.

His constructions, at once eccentric and highly geometric, use crystalline tunnels of mirrors, multicolored washes, focused projections of light, and elements such as water, stone, and moss to shift the viewer's perception of place and self.

By transforming the gallery into a hybrid space of nature and culture, Eliasson prompts an intensive engagement with the world and offers a fresh consideration of everyday life.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue that includes original essays by scholars and curators.

Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson will be on view at SFMOMA from September 8, 2007-February 3, 2008.

Benjamin Chambers Brown

Benjamin Chambers Brown

The second in California Colors series, this exhibition features a selection of vibrant Impressionist paintings by Benjamin Chambers Brown (1865-1942), a Plein Air painter who was one of the first artists to settle and paint in Pasadena.

This will be a rare opportunity to view highlights of Brown's work from private and museum collections.

A full-color exhibition catalog is planned, featuring new scholarship on the artist by Chief Curator of the Crocker Art Museum, Scott A. Shields, Ph.D and an introduction by Executive Director of the Irvine Museum, Jean Stern.

Support for this exhibition has been generously provided by the Pasadena Arts League and the Historical Collections Council of California.

Exactitudes Extended Edition

Exactitudes Extended Edition

Inspired by interest in the striking dress codes of various social groups, Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek have systematically documented numerous identities.

They call their series "Exactitudes" - a contraction of "exact" and "attitude".

By registering their subjects in an identical framework they provide an almost scientific record of people's attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity.

The apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity is taken to such extremes that the artistic aspect dominates the purely documentary element.

Rotterdam's heterogeneous street scene remains a major source of inspiration for them, although for this new edition they have also visited Praia, New York and Bordeaux.

Joan Miro Painting and Anti-Painting 1927-1937

Joan Miro: Painting and Anti-Painting 1927-1937

This first major museum exhibition to focus on Miro the "antipainter" identifies the core practices and strategies he used to attack "painting" between 1927 and 1937, a crucial decade within his long career.

Taking Miro's notorious declaration of 1927 - "I want to assassinate painting" - as its starting point, the exhibition begins with the remarkable series of works on unprimed canvas singled out by Louis Aragon as collage avant la lettre, and concludes with Miro's return to realism in Still Life with Old Shoe.

Acidic color, grotesque disfigurement, purposeful stylistic heterogeneity, and the use of resistant, readymade materials are among the key "tactics of aggression" explored in the exhibition.

By assembling in unparalleled depth the interrelated and oppositional series of paintings, collages, objects, and drawings of this decade, this tightly focused examination reveals underappreciated aspects of an artist long regarded as Surrealism's greatest and most lyrical painter-poet.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

Beyond Ultraman

Beyond Ultraman

A longtime generator of American counterculture, California has become the landing site for Asian vinyl toy culture as well.

Beyond Ultraman examines the vinyl art toy landscape as seen in the work of seven California artists who reflect that movement, turning art into toys and vice versa.

Through originality, wit, flippancy and brilliance, each artist in the exhibition has elevated the vinyl art toy movement and captured the attention of two audiences: the mainstream art community and the toy community.

Featuring the work of Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, David Gonzales, David Horvath, Sun-Min Kim, Brian McCarty and Mark Nagata, Beyond Ultraman is a collaboration between the PMCA and the Los Angeles Toy, Doll and Amusements Museum (LATDA).
